Children’s Garden is an art game that has been showcased at various art festivals, exhibitions, and events.
This unique puzzle game features a chaotic visual style that combines the Japanese folktale of Sai no Kawara—the story of children stacking stones in the afterlife—with "Gift," a religious educational toy that served as the precursor to modern building blocks.
The game's world is based on Sai no Kawara, a limbo-like hell where children who die young are sent.
In traditional Japanese Buddhism, the premature death of a child was seen as an unfilial act that caused grief to their parents, condemning the child to this harsh fate.
Here, the children are forced to endlessly stack stones, only to have them knocked down again as a form of punishment.
The core gameplay focuses on stacking stones in this liminal world. Players help the protagonist by stacking various forms of "Gift" stones, which differ depending on the mission. Each mission offers a short, fast-paced gaming experience.
The outcome of the protagonist's next reincarnation is determined by the player's performance. Will they find peace in their next life? Or will their journey continue?
